NOR market will achieve record revenues in 2006

The NOR flash market is set to return to growth in 2006 following a 7% decline in revenues in 2005, forecasts Semico Research.
The NOR flash market is set to return to growth in 2006 following a 7% decline in revenues in 2005, forecasts Semico Research.

The organisation is predicting that the NOR flash market will achieve record-breaking sales of almost US$11 billion in 2006 as a result of its growing use in devices in the consumer electronics, automotive and telecommunications industries.

"Although the NOR market is going through a soft spot today, unit and megabyte demand are still solid. Current revenue shortfalls are the simple result of a supply/demand imbalance which will correct itself in 2006," said Jim Handy, Semico Research director of non-volatile memory services.

"All commodity memories suffer price slides at the onset of an oversupply, and NOR's current slide is no different than those common in the DRAM market. Demand is still strong, and once this price correction has run its course, the market will return to high growth."

Semico claims that its projections for the NOR flash market are among the most accurate available. Its forecast for the 2003 NOR flash market was within 3% of the actual figure while its projection for 2004 was 13% out.
