European semiconductor sales up 2.7 percent in 2007
A look at the European Semiconductor sales in 2007 with data from WSTS

SEMICONDUCTOR sales on the European market were up 2.7 percent in 2007, the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) reports. This is slightly below the 3.2 percent forecast last autumn, but the fifth consecutive positive year for Europe (not considering the 0.4 percent dip in 2005), the sixth at worldwide level, and prospects for the future look optimistic.

Severe weakness of the memory market had a strong impact on the semiconductor market. On a yearly base the negative impact of DRAM prices has been particularly severe in Europe, where those products still account for around 11% of the total market. Positive figures which were reported for Flash memories (in particular NAND) have not been enough to brighten up the performance of overall memory products. On the positive side throughout the year power semiconductors, micro components, sensors and logic products have shown good performance. These products are mainly used in automotive, communication (mobile phones), industrial & medical applications and in the PC market segments.

European semiconductor sales in December 2007 amounted to US$ 3.534 billion according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS), down 4.0% versus the previous month. This corresponds to an increase of 1.0% compared to the same month last year. In the total year 2007 semiconductor sales increased by 2.7% versus the year 2006. The market in total year 2007 reached a value of US$ 40.972 billion.

The exchange rate of the Euro compared to the US dollar continued its impact on the growth data in the recent months. Measured in Euro, semiconductor sales in December 2007 were 2.442 billion Euro, down 5.7% on previous month and down 10% versus the same month a year ago. For total year 2007 semiconductor sales showed a decline of 5.8% versus the year 2006. In Euro the market in total year 2007 reached a value of 29.915 billion.

On a worldwide basis, semiconductor sales in December 2007 were US$ 22.281 billion, down 3.6% versus the previous month. This results in an increase of 2.5% versus the same month in 2006 and on a total year basis it results in a growth rate of 3.2%. The World market in total year 2007 reached a value of US$ 255.645 billion.
