AMD splits design and manufacturing
In a bid to improve its liquidity, the AMD will split into two companies. One to design chips and the other to manufacture them.
With funding from investment groups associated with the government of Abu Dhabi, the new venture will take over AMD manufacturing facilities, including large plants in Germany. The investment is thought to allow AMD to keep its involvement in chip manufacturing, which is important for competing with its rival Intel.
AMD is expected to own part of this manufacturing facility named The Foundry Company and Advanced Technology Investment (ATIC) based in Abu Dhabi, will own the rest.
As reported in the media, AMD has secured a large amount of confirmed and pledged investment. Approximately $5.7 billion are allocated to a future manufacturing facility in the U.S.
ATIC will invest $3.6 billion as a minimum and a further $6 billion in additional funds over the next five years to upgrade and expand facilities in Dresden, Germany, and the construction of the planned facility in Malta, New York.
AMD's CEO and further executives will make an announcement on Tuesday 07. October.
