Freescale cuts 800 jobs in East Kilbride
The company plans to stop production by spring 2009.
The microchip factory was initially built in 1969 by Motorola to design and manufacture chips for use in car engines and mobile phones.
Freescale has been looking for a buyer for the plant since last year and says that due to technology advances the products produced at the East Kilbride plant are suffering a fall in demand.
The company confirms its plans to stop production at this plant and its closure in spring 2009.
The local government has offered support for the workers who will face redundancy.
