ESIA report on the importance of semiconductors for a sustainable future
“Semiconductor (or microchip) products facilitate a more sustainable approach to life and are the answer to many of the challenges which we face in Europe today” is how Eric-Paul Schat - ESIA’s environment, safety & health Chair - summarizes the role of semiconductors. To highlight just how leading edge semiconductor devices enable a more sustainable use of resources in our daily lives, ESIA has published its 2009 Sustainability Brochure with the title Semiconductors: Enabling Sustainable Living in 21st Century Europe.

Energy smart semiconductors are ensuring the more efficient use of energy in the home, in LCD TV’s, in industrial manufacturing systems, in public transport, in lighting, in personal computers, and in data storage centres. In addition, innovations in semiconductor devices enable positive and sustainable developments in the areas of increasing automotive fuel efficiency; increasing automotive safety; reduced automotive emissions; more secure communications and banking payment systems, more innovative communication solutions, and improved medical devices.

The vision of the European semiconductor companies is to continue to provide more effective systems solutions that enable a more sustainable approach to energy, health care, safety and communication challenges of the future.

ESIA President Peter Bauer adds that “this ESIA sustainability publication could not come at a better time, as it complements ESIA’s ongoing actions to restore and boost European competitiveness by highlighting concrete solutions which semiconductor devices enable, to meet our society’s current environmental challenges.”

It furthermore explains how semiconductors address specific consumer and societal needs and how to realize the potential energy reduction benefits which these products enable in end user applications. It also profiles how the European and global semiconductor industry cooperates on a pre-competitive basis to agree common goals to promote resource conservation and reduce environmental footprints attributable to the production process.
