Internet video device shipments 'will grow 78 per cent in a year'
Semiconductors used in internet video devices could see a rise in demand, after a new report noted that shipments of the electronic technology will grow by 78 per cent year-over-year from 2009 to 2010.
IMS Research has stated that connected Blu-ray players and connected TVs will see the biggest uptake in the short term. One reason for this is that Blu-ray 3D specification has been released to support 3D films which contributed to ten per cent of box office sales.
The study found that Blu-ray shipments are expected to exceed 28 million devices in 2011, which may lead to an increased need for semiconductors which support internet-connected equipment.
"And, with nearly all Blu-ray players manufactured with internet protocol connectivity enabling access to video on demand libraries like Netflix, Amazon, Vudu and CinemaNow, Blu-ray players are more compelling for purchase consideration than they have been since their market debut," said Rebecca Kurlak, author of the report.
A previous study by IMS Research noted that Bluetooth handset manufacturers are offering innovative products to encourage consumer uptake.
