Mitsubishi Electric reveals tiny intelligent power modules

News

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation is launching two silicon transfer-mold-type, super-mini dual inline package intelligent power modules (DIPIPMs).

Their primary use is for inverter drive systems of small-capacity motors in refrigerators and other consumer appliances.

The PSM03S93E5/-A/-C and PSM05S93E5/-A/-C both operate at 500V and 3A and 5A respectively.

The modules use a metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) switching device featuring low power-on voltage in low current regions.

With optimised low-loss-drive ICs and a high-heat dissipation design, the modules will help to reduce power consumption, advance miniaturisation and lower the cost of inverter systems for small-capacity motor drive applications.

Power-on voltage in low current regions is reduced by about 60 percent compared to Mitsubishi Electric's existing "PS219B2" DIPIPM at 0.5A and 250C, by employing a MOSFET switching device.

Reduction of recovered-power loss has been optimised in the MOSFET process and the loss of IC power has been optimised by the control of the IC. The channel temperature rise is also suppressed by reducing power loss in the switching devices and applying a high-heat dissipation insulation sheet. The high-heat dissipation design facilitates thermal radiation and a built-in bootstrap diode with current limiting resistor allows a reduction of external components.

The modules are a compact 24 x 38 x 3.5 mm and provide protection against short circuits, control power-supply under-voltage, over-heating (LVIC monitoring ) and error output.

In 1997, Mitsubishi Electric first commercialised its DIPIPM transfer-mold-type intelligent power module, which has contributed greatly to miniaturisation and energy-savings in inverter systems.

The technology has gained increased importance because annual power consumption has become an important index of energy-saving performance in consumer appliances, such as refrigerators. Needs are increasing for reducing loss in rated power, and also in low current regions where a high percentage of power use is concentrated.

Both the PSM03S93E5/-A/-C (3A/500V) and PSM05S93E5/-A/-C (5A/500V) will ship from March 1st, 2013.
