SOI designer gathers funding

Soisic, a semiconductor intellectual property (SIP) company specialising in silicon on insulator (SOI) designs, has completed series-B funding round of EUR12.5mn led by Atlas Venture. The round also included co-investments from KT Venture and all existing investors. These include CEA Valorisation SA, a subsidiary of the Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique (CEA), the French public technological research organisation and SOI wafer manufacturer Soitec.

Recently appointed Soisic CEO Wayne Cantwell reports: "This new capital will allow the company to continue to expand its product and patent portfolio, as well as expand the sales and marketing efforts of the company. Our primary focus is to service foundries and IDMs in developing the SOI libraries that enable the development of integrated circuits that take advantage of the many benefits of SOI, without intimate knowledge of SOI and the wafer substrate."

Soisic develops and markets SOI specific process test kits, electrical modelling methodology, standard cell libraries, memories and analogue/RF circuit blocks. When compared with equivalent "bulk" CMOS silicon technology, SOI CMOS designs can be 20% faster or use 50% less power. Additionally, SOI is suited for highly integrated mixed signal system-on-chip (SOC) designs due to transistor isolation from the substrate.
