The Advanced Silicon Processing & Manufacturing Technologies (ASP&MT) industry based training (education) programme achieved its first Masters degree on December 3, 2003. The University of Edinburgh conferred the degree - with distinction - on Paul Sermanni (pictured with director of studies Dr Les Haworth and Professor Anthony Walton). The successful graduate is a Device section manager at Motorola, East Kilbride, Scotland.
The modular, part-time, largely distance learning, Masters level programme was designed specifically for the semiconductor manufacturing industry. The programme currently offers 12 modules that include topics spanning device operation and IC technologies through to process optimisation.
A consortium of ten UK universities jointly owns the programme with support from the National Microelectronics Institute (NMI) and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), through the Integrated Graduate Development Scheme (IGDS).
The ten partner universities are Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt, Liverpool, Newcastle, Southampton, Surrey, Swansea and UMIST.
