Inviron’s Climate Systems business has completed a GBP430,000 clean room for OpTIC Technium, a $29mn incubator for the optoelectronics industry based in North Wales (Bulletin 515, January 30, 2004).

Climate Systems worked as a specialist subcontractor to Shepherd Construction to provide a turnkey solution along with all associated heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The clean room provides Class 7 and Class 6 areas with temperature control of ±0.5degreesC and ±5% relative humidity.

The OpTIC Technium facility is designed to help researchers from University College London (UCL) and Cranfield University in developing and commercialising ultra precision surface production technology. The aim is for production of surfaces with ten times the accuracy and with ten times greater speed than current state of the art. The research facility will implement a multi-process production cycle optimised for polishing surfaces with a general 3D form.

The Welsh Development Agency is funding the project in the expectation that OpTIC will create more than 462 high-quality jobs in North Wales and safeguard 1155 others throughout Wales. Other companies contributing to the construction phase include consultants URS and contractors Balfour Kilpatrick.
