Vapour deposition research for OLEDs

Chip manufacturer Philips, research institution RWTH Aachen and equipment supplier AIXTRON signed a collaboration agreement aiming at the joint development of large-area white organic light emitting diodes (OLED).
Chip manufacturer Philips, research institution RWTH Aachen and equipment supplier AIXTRON signed a collaboration agreement aiming at the joint development of large-area white organic light emitting diodes (OLED).

The project is not only targeting the development of OLEDs for lighting applications, but will also focus on establishing new manufacturing processes using AIXTRON's Organic Vapour Phase Deposition (OVPD) technology.

RWTH Aachen has ordered an OVPD system, which will be installed at the manufacturing plant of Philips Lighting in Aachen - Rothe Erde, Germany, to be jointly operated by the project participants.

Funding is largely coming from the European Interreg III program, the state of North Rhine-Westfalia (NRW) and the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

The collaborators see posssible future applications ranging from cars with lucent body parts to large diffuse light sources mimicking natural daylight on room walls and other surfaces. It is hoped that the technology will achieve higher power efficiency, longer lifetimes, large emissive areas, and even adjustable light colour.
