Europe outperforms world in October sales growth

European semiconductor sales rose 3.5 per cent to $3.464 billion in October compared with September, according to the latest figures from the European Semiconductor Industry Association.

The year-on-year improvement was even greater, dollar sales 17 per cent up on October 2003. However, these figures do not take account of fluctuations in exchange rate between the Euro and the dollar.

When these are considered, the sales growth does not appear so impressive, although Europe still outperformed the rest of the world in sequential growth.

The Euro adjusted figures show that European sales in October (€2.819 billion) rose by 2.8 per cent sequentially and eight per cent year-on-year. This compares with worldwide sales growth for October ($18.971 billion) of 1.5 per cent sequentially and 21.8 per cent year-on-year.

Overall, European sales have grown 23.3 per cent (dollar adjusted) and 12.3 per cent (Euro adjusted) during 2004 compared with the same period last year. Global sales meanwhile climbed 31.2 per cent over 2004.

The relatively encouraging figures suggest that Europe might not be hit as hard as the rest of the world by the expected global slowdown. This is thanks to bullish demand from the European automotive and communications markets.
