Fraunhofer to set up nanoelectronics centre

German research super body Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has announced plans to establish a new centre to carry out research and development into advanced nanoelectronics technology.
German research super body Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has announced plans to establish a new centre to carry out research and development into advanced nanoelectronics technology.

Fraunhofer president Professor Hans-Jorg Bullinger said that the centre would work with rival European research bodies – LETI in France and IMEC in Belgium – to "promote European cooperation in nanoelectronics".

To be based in Dresden, the Fraunhofer Centre for Nanoelectronic Technology CNT (its even more of a mouthful in German) is scheduled to start operations by the middle of next year.

The centre will be equipped with its own 800m2 clean room and will operate from facilities semiconductor giant Infineon is currently building in the city. Chip maker AMD is also involved in the project.

The centre will be headed up by Dr Peter Kucher, one of the pioneers in developing chip making technology on 300mm wafers.

The Free State of Saxony and the German research ministry are providing €80 million of institutional funding to set up the centre. AMD and Infineon intend to invest €170 million in research projects at the centre over next five years.
