Infineon shake-up to foster entrepreneurism

German chip making giant Infineon Technologies AG has announced plans to restructure its businesses with the aim of improving decision making processes, boosting efficiency and providing greater customer focus.

Effective from January 1 2005, the company will be reorganised into three business groups, each to be headed up by a member of the managing board. The three groups are: communications; memory products; and automotive, industrial and multi-market. As part of the shake-up, the former mobile and wireline communications arms will be merged to form the new communication division and security and chip card activities will be integrated into the automotive, industrial and multi-market business. The automotive, Industrial and multi-market business group will be headed by Peter Bauer, formerly responsible for sales and marketing. New board member Kin Wah Loh, previously president and managing director of Infineon Asia Pacific, will be responsible for communication. And Dr Andreas von Zitzewitz will head up memory products. "Following a phase of strong growth over the last several years, adjusting our organisation is a consistent step in building up our business groups into powerful and efficient units that can respond better and more quickly to the needs of our customers in the relevant market segments," said Infineon chief executive officer and president Dr Wolfgang Ziebart. "We want to liberate the entrepreneurial forces within the company. Complex matrix organisations with a functional management board are no longer appropriate to the size of the enterprise we are today."
