The European Semiconductor industry continues to be a solid growth marker for the global market, according to figures released by the European Semiconductor Industry Association.

While other areas swing widely from boom to bust, the European industry traditionally maintains a steady growth. While this may not be the most lucrative space in an upturn, it provides an environment for long term achievements.

The semiconductor market recorded a robust growth in November. The typical year-end seasonal strength was reflected by healthy growth in sales of computer chips and electronic components used in wireless handsets. Month on month, the growth in the European market topped the rest of the world in October and November, so the prospect for the fourth quarter remains positive.

European Semiconductor sales in November 2004 amounted to US$ 3.609 billion according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS), up 4.2% versus the previous month. This corresponds to a 14.6% increase compared to the same month last year. On a year-to-date basis, semiconductor sales increased by 22.8% versus the same period in 2003.

The exchange rate of the euro compared to the US dollar has a significant impact on the growth data at this time. Measured in Euro, semiconductor sales in November were E2.878 billion, an increase of 2.1% versus previous month and an increase of 5.4% on the same month a year ago. On a year-to-date basis, semiconductor sales increased by 11.7% compared with the same period in 2003.
