Dell continues to lead the PC maker pack

The top four personal computer (PC) manufacturers from 2003 have retained their positions in 2004.
The top four personal computer (PC) manufacturers from 2003 have retained their positions in 2004, according to market analyst iSuppli's latest rankings of the world's largest computer makers. Dell kept its leading position, shipping 31.4 million units (up 22.8%) during the year and increasing its market share by 1.2% to 16.4%. Hewlett-Packard, also of America, shipped 27.8 million units in 2004 (up 10.6%) maintaining its second position but slipping further behind Dell.

A long way behind in third place is IBM. The company - which is unlikely to appear in the list next year because it is selling its PC arm to Chinese company Lenovo - sold 10.4 million units (16.8%) last year. Behind IBM - in order of their ranking - are Fujitsu-Siemens (7.2 million units), Acer (6.4 million), Toshiba (5.8 million), Lenovo (4.3 million), NEC (4.3 million), Gateway (3.7 million) and, in tenth position, Steve Job's Apple (3.5 million).

The fastest growing of the top ten - in terms of units shipped - was Acer. The Taiwanese company boosted units shipped by 44% during 2004, propelling it ahead of Japan's Toshiba (16.4% growth) into fifth position. Lenovo also gained a position, its 14.9% growth helping it to beat NEC (3.1% growth) to seventh spot. Apple maintained its tenth position with a solid 13.2% growth over the year.

Overall, 191.4 billion PCs were shipped in 2004, up 13.4% on the previous year.
