Philips promises TV on mobile solution by Q4

Number three European chip maker Philips Semiconductor has announced that it will deliver a system-in-package in the fourth quarter that will allow television to be displayed on mobile phones
Number three European chip maker Philips Semiconductor has announced that it will deliver a system-in-package (SiP) in the fourth quarter that will allow television to be displayed on mobile phones.

The SiP solution - to be based on the Digital Video Broadcasting's handheld (DVB-H) standard - will provide a complete digital TV receiver in a package the size of a postage stamp.

Unveiled at the recent 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, it will allow consumers to connect to live television, watch on-line videos and listen to music using nothing more than their mobile phones. Philips claims that the SIP will consume so little power that people will be able to watch television on their mobiles for ten hours without having to recharge the battery.

Philips executive vice president Mario Rivas said: "This is a revolutionary development, integrating all the components of a digital TV receiver into a space small enough to into a mobile phone. Watching television is the natural progression from listening to radio and downloading video clips."
