STMicro launches new NOR Flash security technology

Chip maker STMicroelectronics has announced that it is developing a range of security technologies for protecting NOR Flash memories against unauthorised access
Chip maker STMicroelectronics has announced that it is developing a range of security technologies for protecting NOR Flash memories against unauthorised access.

The company says that the technology – to be promoted under its Krypto trademark - will provide greater security than that already available on the market and will be targeted at mobile applications.

The technology will only allow access to data or code in memory after mutual authentication between the NOR Flash and the CPU. This, the company says, will prevent illegal operations via any interface inside or outside the system.

In addition, the technology will provide a read protection mechanism aimed at preventing unauthorised reading of the memory or duplication of its data in pirate devices, so safeguarding intellectual property and stored programme code.

STMicro plans to make the Krypto available on NOR Flash devices introduced during 2005.
