Atmel expands Scottish Smart card facilities
US semiconductor manufacturer Atmel has launched the second phase of expansion of its Smart Card integrated circuit design and test centre in East Kilbride, Scotland.
US semiconductor manufacturer Atmel has launched the second phase of expansion of its Smart Card integrated circuit design and test centre in East Kilbride, Scotland.
The expansion – partly funded by UK£1.2 million of government aid - provides additional design facilities and increases the centres test and wafer thinning capacity. It is expected to create around 80 new jobs. The facility currently employs 170 people.
The new facilities were officially launched by at an opening ceremony performed by Scottish minister for enterprise Jim Wallace.
He said: "Atmel has more than doubled its workforce since setting up in Scotland in 1999 and this latest expansion is further evidence of Scotland's ability to provide the quality of workforce which such an important high-tech inward investor requires."
