US chip hegemony in jeopardy worries SIA

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) – aka SIA America - is so concerned about the threat of Asia to the US’s dominance of the chip making industry that it is organising a conference on the issue.

A who’s who line-up of US semiconductor bigwigs has been call-up to speak at the event, including Micron chief executive officer Steve Appleton and Intel boss Craig Barrett.

SIA president George Scalise said that action was needed now to maintain the country’s leadership in the sector.

"US technology leadership is not guaranteed. It will be maintained only as long as we effectively invest in our innovation ecosystem. The SIA is calling for a concerted national effort to increase the resources devoted to research and development in the physical sciences.

"This effort must involve industry, academia, and the federal and state governments to ensure continued US leadership in an area that is so vital to our nation's future."

At the heart of the SIA’s concern is that the investment in research and development needed to keep in touch with Moore’s Law is rising rapidly at each technology node.

"While most scientists believe that advances in semiconductor technology can continue on pace with Moore's Law for another 10 to 15 years, there are physical, economic, and technological limits that will end our ability to continue progress using current technology," said Scalise.
