TI develops first single chip mobile solution

US chip maker Texas Instruments has developed what it claims is the first single chip solution for mobile phones.
US chip maker Texas Instruments has developed what it claims is the first single chip solution for mobile phones.

Based on the company’s digital radio frequency processor (DRP) technology, the new product integrates the bulk of handset electronics - including digital baseband, SRAM, logic, radio frequency, power management and analogue functions - into one chip.

It paves the way for the creations of smaller and more powerful mobiles phones. Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia has already agreed to incorporate the new chip in the next generation of its products.

In developing the new chip, Texas Instruments is fulfilling a promise it made in 2002 that it would create a new single-chip solution for mobile phones by 2004. The first version of the chip was sampled in December 2004. And in February the company produced the world’s first GSM cellular phone using its DRP technology.

"Over two years ago, Texas Instruments announced its vision to integrate its DRP technology in our mobiles systems solutions," said Giles Delfassy, general manager of the company’s wireless terminals business.

"This vision - first put into action is a single chip solution for Bluetooth connectivity - has now been continued with the single chip GPRS solution."
