Number one European chip maker Infineon Technologies has agreed to sell a "significant" part of its optical networking business to US company Exar Corporation for a cash sum.

The acquisition includes assets relating to multi-rate TDM framer, fibre Channel over SONET/SDH, resilient packet ring products, as well as certain intellectual property for data over SONET products.

Infineon will however retain ownership of its MetroMapper family of Ethernet over SONET products. The transaction is expected to close shortly.

Infineon management board member Loh Kin Wah said that the sale was a continuation of the company’s strategy of disposing of non-core businesses.

"Following the sale of a significant part of our fibre optics group, the optical networking sale is yet another step towards our overall commitment to streamlining our business activities to focus on our core markets in wireless and broadband access communication.

"In Exar, we have found an excellent company with a mutual interest in supporting our customer base."
