Intel announces major shake-up of its business
The centrepiece of the reorganisation is a break-up of the company’s two divisions - chip architecture and telecommunications - into five new businesses, each specialising in a specific area of the electronics market. The areas covered included mobility, the digital enterprise, the digital home, digital health and channel products.
The brainchild of Intel president and chief operating officer Paul Otellini - who is set to replace Barrett as chief executive officer this year - the reorganisation is based on the idea of "platformisation", whereby all the elements needed to create a product are bundled together.
"The platform-based organisations reflect the ongoing convergence of computing and communications by incorporating both capabilities across the new groups," the company explained in a statement.
Otellini said: "The new organisation will address growth and opportunities by better anticipating and addressing market needs, speeding decision making and ensuring worldclass operational excellence."
