Semiconductor company Atmel Corporation has announced that a finger sensor security chip it has developed has been incorporated into a Hewlett Packard pocket PC.

The chip provides users with an alternative security method to password entry. It uses a patented method for imaging the entire finger by "sweeping" it across the sensor.

This image is then processed through authentication software, and extracts a template, which is used for fingerprint comparison.

Such security techniques, although rare at present, are likely to enter into common usage in the next few years.
