Russell Ellwanger has been appointed chief executive officer of troubled Israeli pure-play foundry Tower Semiconductor. He will assume his new position at the start of May.
Ellwanger has more than 25 years experience leading international semiconductor and technology companies. Most recently, he was group vice president of equipment giant Applied Materials.
Acting chief executive officer Udi Hillman – who took over from Carmel Vernia when the latter decided to step down to "pursue other interests" – welcomed the new appointment.
"Tower's expectations for rapid growth in specialised foundry services dictate that we bring in someone of Russell Ellwanger's experience, strategic thinking and management skills," he said.
"The appointment of Ellwanger is a significant strengthening of our senior management team. He is multifaceted with broad and deep knowledge of the semiconductor industry.
"I expect that his energy and experience will inspire the Tower team and fuel considerable future success for the company."
