Acquisition creates world's largest photomask maker

Japanese photomask maker Toppan Printing has completed the acquisition of US rival DuPont Photomasks for US$650 million.
Japanese photomask maker Toppan Printing has completed the acquisition of US rival DuPont Photomasks for US$650 million.

The firm has now overtaken DNP as the worlds largest photomask manufacturer, with a market share of almost 40% (according to market analyst The Information Network).

Under the terms of deal, originally announced in October last year and backed by Duponts shareholders in March, Toppan had paid around US$27.00 in cash per share for Dupont.

DuPont has now become a wholly owned subsidiary of Toppan and will operate under the trade name, Toppan Photomasks. The firm will continue to be incorporated in Delaware and remain headquartered in Round Rock.

Akihiro Nagata, a senior managing director of Toppan and head of Toppan's electronics division, has been appointed chairman of Toppan Photomasks while Marshall Turner has been made chief executive officer.

Nagata said; "Toppan has positioned its photomask business as a key engine for future growth. Through this acquisition, Toppan has moved to meet an evolving need among semiconductor manufacturers for comprehensive photomask product supply based on an advanced technology development capability, through a global network.

"The combination of Toppan Photomasks with Toppan's existing photomask business will create the world's premier photomask manufacturer, and will bring about significant synergies, providing enhanced access to customer business and increased cost efficiencies."
