Unaxis reports Q3 2004 Semiconductor Equipment sales at CHF166mn, a 95% increase over Q3 2003's CHF85mn.

Unaxis reports Q3 2004 Semiconductor Equipment sales at CHF166mn, a 95% increase over Q3 2003's CHF85mn. Orders received during the quarter were worth CHF98mn and orders on hand amount to CHF230mn. Orders received in its IC assembly and packaging division were worth CHF28mn, compared with CHF44mn in Q3 2003. The wafer-processing sector did better with orders of CHF67mn, compared with CHF27mn. Display technology did very poorly in orders - CHF2mn compared with CHF33mn last year.

A Unaxis representative put the problems in the flat panel display (LCD) sector down to volatility in market demand and "profitability issues" in the division itself. Logistics are a particular problem with some of the equipment being too large to ship even by Jumbo jet. Unfortunately, all Unaxis' display customers are in Asia. A downturn is also being experienced in Unaxis' assembly and packaging ESEC subsidiary.

The company also sees increasing demand for 300mm wafers from 14.4% of sales in its FY2003 to 27.8% in FH1 2004 (32.5% in FQ2). The company expects its FH1 operating margin to be "almost at breakeven". Full results including the operating profit/loss is due November 16, 2004.

TSMC expects that its utilisation rate in Q4 2004 to be in the mid-80 percentage points. UMC is forecasting 70% utilisation, but expects a recovery within two quarters. Both companies say that they are maintaining capital expenditure levels in Q4 2004 giving year totals of $2.4 for TSMC and $1.2bn for UMC. Capital expenditure budgets at UMC are expected to be in the range $1-2bn.
