Harushige Sugimoto, senior vice president of Oki Electric, comments: "When RadiCool is used in electronic equipment, there is no need for conventional heat sinks or cooling fans, enabling equipment to become drastically smaller." Sugimoto also believes that since the heat loss can be controlled, RadiCool will also contribute to equipment having a longer life, higher performance and lower power consumption.
RadiCool comes as a sticky sheet of thin beaten-copper with a material called "Cerac alpha" painted on. Oki has produced two types - a sheet and a ring. Cerac alpha is an environment-friendly, inorganic liquid ceramic paint for heat radiation, co-developed by Oki Electric and Ceramission. It is designed to make a 50-150micron thin coat. The material's ceramic heat radiation characteristics converts heat to far infrared radiation. The 30% heat reduction RadiCool can achieve includes 20% from Cerac alpha's heat radiation and 10% from the thin beaten-copper's heat conduction.
Because polyimide is used in RadiCool, it can easily be bent or pulled, and cut with scissors. In addition, Oki uses its Electric Cable division's technology for flexible printed circuits (FPCs) to make RadiCool only 0.2mm thick and flexible.
