Samsung Electronics has developed a 2Mpixel CMOS image sensor (CIS) chip, claiming an industry first with the use of 0.13micron process technology.

The company also claims the industry's smallest 2.8mm2 pixel size with a 1/3.2-inch optical format, offering a small form factor for camera phones. The image sensor operates at 34MHz at 15 frames per second on just 80mW. Low-light performance enables imaging at a 2lux minimum illumination rate. This exceeds the sensitivity levels of general CMOS-based sensors, says Samsung.

Sharp has developed a new 2Mpixel CCD camera module featuring a 2X optical inner zoom lens. Intended for use in high-end camera-equipped mobile phones, the new LZ0P3738 will be available in quantity beginning in October 2004.

The previous LZ0P3731 2Mpixel CCD camera module already had auto-focus capability. The new module's optical zoom lens is switchable between normal and 2X zoom. In addition, the use of an inner zoom type in which the lens section does not protrude from the module body achieves a compact module size that can be incorporated into folding "clamshell" style mobile phone handset designs.
