Mitsubishi Electric is to expand annual production capacity of photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules at its Nakatsugawa and Kyoto facilities from 90MW to 135MW by April 2005.
The company further aims to establish a production system with an annual capacity of 230MW by 2006 supported by a JPY3.3bn investment in new equipment.
The company expects sales to increase through 2004 as international activities aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions continue to raise environmental awareness around the globe.
Mitsubishi Electric's PV sales during 2004 have been more than double those of 2003, thanks in part to government subsidies in its domestic market of Japan added to greater demand in overseas markets, in particular Europe. In October 2001, total annual production capacity at Mitsubishi was 25MW. This has since increased to 35MW in January 2003, to 50MW in September 2003 and then 90MW in June 2004.
