The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has established a working group to consider industrial standards for micro fuel cell for use in portable products, including notebook PCs and mobile phones. Japanese representatives proposed the move. Progress in the area has been seen in terms of prototypes for compact micro fuel cell power units and micro fuel cells.

Working Group 10 (WG10) will discuss interchangeability standardisation and plans to set common guidelines on specifications for micro fuel cell power units and their fuel cartridges by 2007. Dr Fumio Ueno, technology executive for Toshiba's Display Devices and Components Control Centre, will chair the working group.
