Dr Morris Chang, founder of the worlds number one foundry, TSMC, has appointed Dr Rick Tsai as his successor as chief executive officer. Tsai – who is currently chief operating officer – will take up his new role on July 1.

73-year-old Chang – a legendary figure in the semiconductor industry – will become chairman of the company. Deputy chief executive officer Dr FC Teng meanwhile will be made vice chairman as part of the management shake-up.

In a company statement, a TSMC spokesman said: "Dr Chang believes that the structure of the top management team should be planned in advance and implemented in steps. In line with that philosophy, he has contemplated TSMCs future organisation over the past few years.

"Recently, Dr Chang felt that TSMC had already become a strong company, and the management had proven themselves ready to assume larger responsibilities for the future. He therefore proposed the changes and received the unanimous support of the Board."

CEO-in-waiting Tsai has been president and chief operating officer of TSMC since 2001. Prior to that, he was executive vice president of worldwide marketing and sales from 2000 to until 2001. He joined TSMC in 1989 as deputy director of Fab 2 operations.

He holds a PhD in material science from Cornell University, USA, and has been active in the semiconductor industry for 22 years. "Dr Tsai, with his outstanding talents and experiences, is going to be an outstanding CEO for TSMC," said the spokesman.
