Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) have looked to the compound eyes insects to provide a model for thinner imaging devices. While resolution is limited, such devices can be thinner and have a wider angle of view compared with traditional imaging systems.

IOF prototypes have been produced that are thinner than 0.4mm. Mobile phone imagers based on human eye type optics are at best 7mm thick.

One possible application for thin imagers that the institute sees is incorporation into chipcards that could detect when strangers are attempting to use them.
