Texas Instruments (TI), STMicroelectronics and Motorola's Freescale Semiconductor experienced declining market share in wireless IC sales in 2003, according to iSuppli. These market movements reflect the shift of handset sales from Nokia and Motorola to Asian rivals. While TI still led with a 20.7% share, this compares with 21.2% in 2002.
ST's 2002 share of 11.2% fell to 9.0% in 2003. Motorola went from 8.0% to 6.6% (Freescale). The overall market was $2.6bn in 2003, up from 2002's $2.2bn. By focusing on the merchant market and Asian phone market sales, Infineon Technologies was able to increase its share from 6.6% to 7.0% in 2002. Qualcomm also increased its share from 18.1% to 18.4%.
Stepper suppliers made $3bn in revenues and finished 2003 with a 14% increase in sales, according to VLSI Research. Dutch lithography toolmaker ASML finished as the No.1 stepper supplier in terms of revenue generated. From a units standpoint however, Nikon outsold ASML by almost 100 units.
