Germany's federal ministry of education and research, the BMBF, has approved the funding for a joint project to establish an R&D training centre in China for optical technologies. Tsinghua University, Beijing, RWTH Aachen University of Technology and Hong Kong University (HKUST) will partner with Aixtron in this programme.

The aim is to advance R&D as well as training in the field of compound semiconductors for optoelectronic applications. Business students and engineers of small and medium sized companies will be trained to develop competitive new products in the field of optoelectronics using Aixtron technology. Basic physical understanding as well as modern device concepts - e.g. for telecom lasers, white LED technology etc. - will be imparted. Planned project steps comprise an MOCVD short course in China giving basics of compound semiconductor technology, electronic and optoelectronic devices, production issues, and the use of nanotechnology for improved devices.

Further hands on lab courses will be conducted in China using MOCVD equipment. These courses will include the improvement of material and device quality, yield management and other relevant topics. At a later stage, Chinese students and engineers will do scientific work in Aachen regarding GaN on Si for solid state lighting, new laser concepts, improved LED manufacturing and high power high frequency HEMT devices.

Advantest and SUSS Microtec have joined forces on an automatic wafer/board probe system for 20GHz high-frequency multi-port devices. The system can use either Advantest's R3860A RF component or R3770 network analysers with SUSS' PA200HF semi-automatic prober.

Applied Materials has made a collaboration agreement with Phoenix Silicon International (PSI) of Hsinchu, Taiwan, to provide enhanced 300mm test wafer reclaim services. Applied Materials will be responsible for global sales and marketing of PSI's 300mm wafers and will also provide new technology and equipment to PSI. PSI will perform the wafer reclaim itself.

Dialog Semiconductor has a new line of colour liquid crystal display (LCD) drivers for the mobile phone market, based on Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing's 0.35micron processes and eMemory Technology's one-time programmable (OTP) embedded memory designs. This latest product builds upon an existing relationship between the companies starting in 1998. Dialog Semiconductor's family of colour display drivers provides a single-chip solution for colour STN (super-twisted nematic) LCDs.

The drivers provide resolution of up to 65,000 colours and a video rate of more than 15 frames per second. eMemory's OTP technology, delivered as an IP block, replaces the traditional fuses used to adjust the contrast of its colour LCD driver. This removes the need to run a set-up trim at chip testing, saving assembly time and cost.
