The Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) – a UK-based research institute – has announced UK£1.6 million of funding for research into cutting edge technologies such as nanotechnology and photonics.

Just under UK£568,000 of the money will fund research into carbon nanotube photonics, hybrid quantum dots for displays and solar cells, and spintronic devices.

This research is being undertaken by the University of Surrey in association with the University of Southampton, the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London and the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology.

A further UK£610,000 will be used by the UK Engineering and Physical Research Council’s Ion Beam Centre to build new tools for nanotechnology and surface analysis.

The ATI has also awarded the UK National Physical Laboratory a UK£450,000 research contract to make quantum-effect devices using state-of-the-art nano-fabrication techniques.
