NAND was the fastest growing sector of the industry in 2004

The NAND sector grew faster than any other part of the semiconductor industry in 2004, according to a new report by Semico Research.
The NAND sector grew faster than any other part of the semiconductor industry in 2004, according to a new report by Semico Research.

The company says that NAND revenues leapt by 80% to US$7.2 billion in 2004 but despite the strong growth failed to overtake rival flash memory NOR, which ended 2004 at $9.1 billion.

"It is astounding how NAND technology continues to grow, even in a year where it suffered a price collapse," said Jim Handy, director of Semico Research's non-volatile memory service.

According to Semico, NAND and NOR accounted for 91% of all non-volatile memory revenues in 2004. ROM, EPROM, and EEPROM each generated less than $1 billion in revenues last year.

South Korean electronics giant Samsung was the market leader in the non-volatile memory sector, thanks in part to its dominance of the NAND market, in which it has a 54% share.

The company's NAND sales grew rapidly, making up US$2 billion of the total growth of $3.2 billion achieved by NAND in 2004.

Spansion - the AMD/Fujitsu joint venture - just managed to displace Intel as market leader in NOR, despite rapidly losing ground against Intel towards the end of the year.

The top spots in ROM, EPROM, and EEPROM were taken by Macronix, Oki and Atmel respectively.
