European Semiconductor has an excellent track record of success with the companies that have received the annual European Semiconductor/Siltronic Start Up Award. In an industry with a fast turnover of companies, every winner has gone on to further success. At this year’s JEMI UK Conference in Edinburgh the tradition continues with the announcement of the 2005 winner, Replisaurus Technologies from Kista in Sweden. The award was announced by European Semiconductor Editor in Chief, David Ridsdale at a dinner at the Sheraton Hotel in Edinburgh.

Replisaurus Technologies has developed the ECPR (Electro Chemical Pattern Replication) method for the production of micro and nanoscale metal patterns. ECPR is an electrochemical deposition technique utilizing a reusable master electrode as a template to fabricate metal patterns in one single replication step. By combining pattern definition and metal deposition in one step ECPR eliminates the need for traditional photolithography and plating. One single ECPR tool replaces 6 tools in the lithography based process line for final manufacturing processes.

The development of the first ECPR equipment was at the Lund Institute of Technology. The first real proof-of-concept was achieved when it was shown that the technology could be used for depositing 10µm metal structures on flexible organic substrates and silicon wafers. During 2002 the company Replisaurus Technologies was founded by Patrik Möller, Peter Wiwen-Nilsson and Mikael Fredenberg. In the beginning of 2003 Replisaurus moved to Kista, Stockholm and started collaboration with the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), supported by the KK-foundation. Through this collaboration the R&D efforts related to the ECPR-method continued in the Electrum laboratory, jointly owned by KTH and Acreo. Today most of the R&D activities are located to the electrum cleanroom, where Replisaurus has its ECPR-equipment installed.

In response to winning the award Mikael Fredenberg, Chief Operating Officer of Replisaurus had the following to say, ‘The team at Replisaurus is honoured that the company has been selected as the winner of the European Semiconductor/Siltronic Start Up Award.. Replisaurus is offering the ECPR metal printing technology to the IC manufacturing industry and we are excited that our company have received such attention from European Semiconductor. This type of acknowledgement is of high importance when introducing a disruptive technology to the industry. In addition, it gives us another indication that we are on the right track as well as further motivation to be 100% committed to our goal of providing the most accurate and cost efficient semiconductor metallization solution.’
