Sales of semiconductors fell more sharply in Europe than in any other region of the world during May, according to the latest figures from the European Semiconductor Industry Association.
European chip sales dropped by 3.9% sequentially to US$3.191 billion in May, although they were up 0.1% compared with May last year. On a year-to-date basis, sales were up 4.9% versus the same period in 2004.
When the fluctuating exchange rate between the euro is taken into account, European semiconductor sales in May - euro 2.462 billion - fell by 3.2% sequentially and 6.3% year on year.
The weak performance of the European semiconductor sector in May has been blamed on weak results for microprocessors, microcontrollers, application specific MOS logic and DRAM.
However, Flash memory products bucked the downward trend, achieving 3% growth. Application specific ICs for automobiles and sensors also performed strongly.
