Chinas leading PC maker, Lenovo Group, is will become the worlds ninth-largest OEM semiconductor buyer in 2005, with chip purchases of US$4.3 billion over the year, forecasts market analyst iSuppli.

This will be first time that a Chinese company has made it into the top ten of chip purchasers. The company was the 36th biggest semiconductor buyer in 2004.

The main reason for the companys rapid rise up the OEM ranks is its recent purchase of IBMs PC manufacturing operations.

Thanks to the addition of IBM's PC business, Lenovos semiconductor purchases are expected to rise more than four fold from about US$1 billion in 2004.

The company is however still a long way behind the number one OEM chip purchaser Hewlett Packard, which is expected to spend US$13.7 billion on semiconductors in 2005, up 9.7% on 2004.

The second and third largest OEM chip purchasers in 2005 are expected to be computer maker Dell and mobile phone manufacturer Nokia.
