New York is fab for AMD!
Plans for Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) to build a new $3.2 billion microprocessor factory in New York will work towards facilitating expansion against rival competitor Intel Corp.
Reuters news service reported in a talk with, AMD's Vice President of manufacturing operations, Preston Snuggs that the New York state had incentivised the proposal with $900 million of government funding under the premise of cash, research and development subsidies and tax rebates. Operation is expected to begin in 2010 at the earliest with a capacity of 20,000 wafers per month, doubling AMD's current total capacity. These plans come in succession to the recent announcement from AMD of plans to invest $2.5 billion expanding and upgrading its chip plant in Dresden, Germany in a bid to quadruple capacity in a three-year period. The New York fab will be funded directly by a $500 million construction grant and $150 million in R&D subsidies spanning a five-year period, with $250 million in tax rebates advised Snuggs. Long term plans for manufacturing and a good road map for the future were reported to be some of the anticipated benefits advised Snuggs.
