The European semiconductor market ends the second quarter up 1.4% compared to the same quarter of 2005.

This result has been mainly driven by the solid growth for Flash memory products, particularly at the end of last year, and partly by a rebound in DRAM sales.

Application specific products reported a good result, confirming the European market leadership in automotive semiconductors and amongst the good performers globally in communication products. Discretes grew at a faster pace than the overall IC market.

Amongst products performing below average in this quarter, Microprocessors, which account a significant share of the European market, experienced a sharp decline compared to the previous quarter and vis a vis the same quarter in 2005.
European Semiconductor sales in June 2006 amounted to US$ 3.155 billion according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS), down 1.9% versus the previous month. This corresponds to a 1.4% growth compared to the same month last year. On aYTD basis, semiconductor sales declined in 2006 by 1.6% versus the year 2005.

The exchange rate of the Euro compared to the US$ has a controversial impact on the growth data in the recent month now. Measured in Euro, semiconductor sales in June were EURO 2.509 billion, down 3.9% on previous month and up 1.2% versus the same month a year ago. On a YTD basis, semiconductor sales show in 2006 a growth of 2.8% versus 2005.

On a worldwide basis, semiconductor sales in June were US$ 19.639 billion, down 0.7% versus the previous month. This results in an increase of 9.4% versus the same month in 2005 and on a YTD basis it results in a growth rate of 8.3%.
