CANEUS 2006 conference unveils breakthrough Micro/Nano technologies

News
Major breakthroughs in the use of micro and nano technologies (MNTs) for satellite and commercial defense avionics applications were unveiled on an international scale at the CANEUS 2006 Conference held in Toulouse, France, home of Airbus Industries in France's Aerospace Valley.

Some 300 of the world's top scientists, physicists, engineers, venture capitalists, and legal specialists gathered at the event to debate MNT issues for satellite and commercial defense avionics applications. The attendees came away with a number of significant governmental, organizational, academic and industrial agreements that promise to propel MNT technologies forward. The attendance figure represented a 20% increase over that of the last CANEUS 2004 meeting.

"This conference showed the need for CANEUS to act as a facilitator to promote MNTs' benefits of low cost, small size and low power to the designers, supplier and end-user communities," said Dr. Milind Pimprikar, CANEUS' Founder and Chairman. "Our goal is to increase our membership in order to successfully move MNT forward commercially, by establishing and promoting collaboration and cooperation between aerospace companies, space agencies, defense organizations and other industries engaged in MNT education and technology development for aerospace applications," he added.

"The number of CANEUS 2006 co-hosts, strategic partners and sponsors has grown tremendously," said Dr. Pimprikar.

Co-hosts included the CANEUS organization, France's CNRT (Centre National de Recherche Technologique Aéronautique Espace),and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Strategic partners included Aerospace Valley France, the Centre for Large Space Structures and Systems (CLS3), France's Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), and the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

CANEUS also has grown it its global participation with countries from North and South America, Europe and Asia. These countries include the United States, Canada, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Japan, Korea, and most recently Brazil. CANEUS is largely supported by industry groups around the world such as Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, EADS, Airbus, as well as the U.S. Air Force, Army and Navy.

Interest in the conference was intense and spanned a very wide range of applications. The conference provided a useful venue for introducing MNT products to the market. Attendees benefited greatly by networking across a broad spectrum of expertise from researchers in the laboratory, to system developers, to program managers and investors, to government policy makers.

"It solidified CANEUS' position as an international leader," said Dr. Pimprikar.

At the conference, the Nano-Pico Satellite (NPS) Industry Working Group, an international body, convened to establish standardization practices for small satellites. The Group proposed using the same approach adopted by SEMI (Semiconductor Industry Association) for addressing the needs of NPS satellite programs in order to move MNT technology further forward worldwide. Present programs have been found to be very fragmented and can benefit from more standardization. At the conference, concerted efforts were being made by the CANEUS Workshop Groups towards creating a $5m fund for the CANEUS NPS Pilot Project.
