WSTS European sales up 8.1% in the third quarter
European semiconductor sales significantly accelerated, month-on-month, from August to September, resulting in a healthy growth for the third quarter, +8.1% over Q2 (comparable to the worldwide market growth of +8.0%).
European semiconductor sales significantly accelerated, month-on-month, from August to September, resulting in a healthy growth for the third quarter, +8.1% over Q2 (comparable to the worldwide market growth of +8.0%).
The good performance of the European market in Q3 was primarily due to Microprocessors and DRAM memory which grew together 21% over Q2, representing 70% of the total dollar market increase.
NOR Flash memory market, boosted by robust seasonal demand for cellular phone, grew 24% and accounted for 9% of the total increase. DSP, mainly driven by cellular phone, and specific ICs for digital consumer devices such as set-top box, also recorded a strong growth in Q3. Discrete, Sensors, Standard Linear ICs and Microcontrollers decreased moderately in Q3 after a strong performance during the first half of the year.
European Semiconductor sales in September 2006 amounted to US$ 3.412 billion according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS), up 6.4% versus the previous month. This corresponds to a 3.7% growth compared to the same month last year. On a YTD basis, semiconductor sales increased in 2006 by 0.3% versus the year 2005.
The exchange rate of the Euro compared to the US$ continues its impact on the growth data in the recent month. Measured in Euro, semiconductor sales in September were EURO 2.675 billion, up 6.1% on previous month and down 0.5% versus the same month a year ago. On a YTD basis, semiconductor sales show in 2006 a growth of 1.7% versus 2005.
On a worldwide basis, semiconductor sales in September were US$ 21.370 billion, up 4.2% versus the previous month. This results in an increase of 9.3% versus the same month in 2005 and on a YTD basis it results in a growth rate of 8.9%.
