Wind River Systems, Inc. has announced a new collaboration with Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) to enable Wind River’s Linux-based device software platform and Wind River Workbench development tools, including Wind River Workbench On-chip Debugging tools, on TI’s OMAP2430 applications processor for handsets and personal digital assistants (PDAs). By providing support for the OMAP2430 processor’s advanced, multimedia performance features, Wind River Linux will allow mobile handset manufacturers to develop, test and run next-generation, revenue-generating applications such as video conferencing, digital music, mobile-to-mobile gaming and mobile TV, faster and at a lower cost. “Wind River's commercial-grade Linux and the advanced multimedia performance features in OMAP2430 processors will offer a powerful Linux platform that supports multimedia-rich, mobile applications and reduce the time and cost associated with bringing these applications to the mobile device market,” said Jeff Wender, worldwide marketing manager, Software Solutions for Texas Instruments Cellular Systems Solutions. “We are excited to work with Wind River to provide high-quality, flexible, solutions for the global wireless market on the development platform of their choice, and we’re pleased to welcome Wind River to our wireless ecosystem.” “In a market that is constantly demanding newer, more advanced and multimedia-rich applications at faster pace than ever before, mobile handheld manufacturers must reduce their development costs and focus their resources on creating highly-differentiated, competitive offerings that are compelling to consumers,” said John Bruggeman, chief marketing officer, Wind River Systems. “Wind River and TI are working together to provide an infrastructure that can be embraced by a wide variety of handheld device manufacturers looking for market advantage.”
