Bipartisan agreement will help US manufacturers

Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) President George Scalise has heralded a bipartisan agreement between the Administration and Members of Congress that will pave the way for progress on key trade opening agreements

Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) President George Scalise has heralded a bipartisan agreement between the Administration and Members of Congress that will pave the way for progress on key trade opening agreements.

"U.S. semiconductor companies have over two thirds of their manufacturing capacity here in this country, while over three quarters of our markets are outside of our borders," Scalise said.

"Market opening measures like the ones that will be enabled by this landmark bipartisan agreement will benefit U.S. high technology manufacturers and their employees," added Scalise.

"I commend the leadership of those in the Congress and the Administration who negotiated this compromise," said Scalise.

The bipartisan agreement will lay the foundation for the renewal of trade promotion authority and subsequent negotiations to complete the Doha Round under the World Trade Organization, and will also allow for movement on free trade agreements, including the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement.

"The U.S. semiconductor industry is the most competitive in the world. When markets are open, we can compete and we can be successful. This agreement will allow the United States Trade Representative to move forward with key trade agreements, and continue the process of opening markets for U.S. high technology products," Scalise concluded.
