Tegal Corporation has announced it has received a multi-tool order for plasma etch system upgrades from a leading global manufacturer of hard disk drives. The system upgrades will be installed in the customer's North American and Southeast Asian manufacturing facilities, and will be used to enhance production of hard disk drives for consumer electronic and mobile storage applications."Tegal won this order on the basis of our demonstrated technical capabilities and our ability to support the demanding requirements of hard disk drive manufacturing," said John Almerico, Tegal Corporation's Marketing Director for Etch Products. "Tegal's magnetic storage customers, such as this global hard disk drive maker, are continuing to invest in production capacity, and in manufacturing technology, to support the double-digit growth demand for magnetic storage products. Tegal has etch capabilities for the hard disk drive market in both font-end wafer fabs and in back-end slider fabs, and we are continuing, with our customers' encouragement and side-by-side participation, to bring new plasma etching tools and processes into this important market."The hard disk drive market is expected to grow from the 400 million units shipped in 2006 to more than 600 million units per year in 2009 and 2010. Along with the year-on-year double-digit growth in shipped units, the hard drive industry will also benefit from the recent trend of consumers purchasing large-capacity hard disk drives to support the data storage needs of the "Terabyte Home."
