European sales of semiconductors were essentially flat in May, consistent with the seasonal behaviour of the second quarter in recent years. This overall figure was the result of diversified patterns observed across segments and products.
European sales of semiconductors were essentially flat in May, consistent with the seasonal behaviour of the second quarter in recent years. This overall figure was the result of diversified patterns observed across segments and products.

Microchips used mainly for communication and automotive applications show positive developments compared to April, while the industrial and computer segments were mainly impacted by negative sales.

Looking specifically at products categories, microprocessors and DRAMS sales have been negatively impacted by declining average selling prices (ASPs) since the beginning of this year. Increased sales were reported over April for logic products, flash memories, digital signal processors. Also microcontrollers grew again in May after a weak start in 2007.

European Semiconductor sales in May 2007 amounted to US$ 3.275 billion according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS), down 0.5% versus the previous month. This corresponds to a 1.8% growth compared to the same month last year. On a YTD basis semiconductor sales increased by 4.0% versus the same period in the year 2006.

The exchange rate of the Euro compared to the US$ continued further its impact on the growth data in the recent months. Measured in Euro, semiconductor sales in May 2007 were EURO 2.442 billion, down 1.6% on previous month and down 6.5% versus the same month a year ago. On a YTD basis semiconductor sales showed a decline of 4.2% versus the same period in the year 2006.

On a worldwide basis, semiconductor sales in May 2007 were US$ 20.282 billion, up 1.2% versus the previous month. This results in an increase of 2.4% versus the same month in 2006 and on a YTD basis it results in a growth rate of 2.8%.
