European collaboration will train and support UK microelectronics design community

iSLI and Silicon South West are collaborating to provide Continual Professional Development (CPD) training to the UK based Integrated Circuits (IC) community. Up until now, iSLI has been successfully running the CPD training programme. Over the last 18 months, they have experienced an impressive 30% increase in uptake of CPD courses, a figure which is forecast to increase further in the next year. The courses attract new graduates, practising engineers and managers needing to gain an awareness of current and future issues in the field. The CPD will now be made available through the Bath Innovation Centre which currently provides hands-on support and expertise to new technology enterprises, allowing iSLI to run the courses at both twin sites. IC and MEMS Design software for qualifying start-ups and SMEs will also be provided via the iSLI software hub. Tony Harker, CEO of iSLI comments, "Collaboration between two of the major technology clusters within the UK is a natural progression. I see this as the first stage in an ongoing partnership which should aim to share, streamline and enhance support for the UK micro-electronics design community." Integrated circuit design is a subset of electrical engineering and the South West is home to one of the UK's largest concentrations of silicon designers. The region hosts globally successful start-up chip makers in wireless, high-performance computing, networking and telecoms, multi-national chip and equipment companies and global mobile operators. "I'm delighted to be collaborating with the iSLI. It's an important step forward in developing and maintaining the skills we need for the continued success of our region's micro-electronics companies," said Simon Bond of Silicon South West.
