LSI Corporation has announced that it has joined The Green Grid, a non-profit consortium of information technology companies and professionals seeking to lower the overall consumption of power in data centres around the globe. Dr. Claudine Simson, executive vice president and chief technology officer of LSI, said, "Power consumption is becoming a front-burner concern among IT managers. Not only have issues such as global warming and rising costs pushed energy to centre stage but, industry analysts have predicted that many data centres soon will lack sufficient energy capacity to power and cool the latest high-density computer equipment. LSI has made energy efficiency a focus of its R&D efforts. We are delighted to be collaborating with other industry leaders to promote the greening of the data centre." LSI is pursuing reduced power consumption across a broad front in data storage. Strategies for reducing power consumption start at the system level and include methods to spin down inactive hard disk drives, develop solid-state drives, and virtualise storage. At the component level, the company's newest generation of read channel, PHY and pre-amplifier chips consume significantly less power than the previous generation.
